Belts & Significance of rank

« Back

Taekwon-do has got a didactical system, as many other martial arts, that is based on an hierarchical system of rank. The various grades to be attained in Taekwon-do, reflect technical abilities and serve as an incentive for the Taekwon-do practicioner to learn more. In Taekwon-do there are 10 kup grades (coloured belts) and 9 degrees (blackbelts). A practicioner starts with 10th kup (white belt) and it is possible to obtain the first degree - black belt - after several years of training.

A big misconception is the idea that all blackbelts are grandmasters. With the attainment of 1st degree, the student is just at the beginnen of the road. The hierarchical rank system also decides the student's place in class. The student with the highest degree is in front right, while the lowest degree is in back left. This is another psychological incentive for the student: to strive for the place in front-right.

In the ITF system of rank the title of master (sahyunim) is attained at 7th degree, while the title grandmaster (sasun) is attained at 9th degree. This is the highest possible rank in ITF Taekwon-do and only attained by very few persons, amongst who are General Choi Hong Hi (1918-2002), Sasun Park Jong So, Sasun Hwang Kwang Sung, Sasun Rhee Ki Ha, Sasun Leong Wai Meng en Sasun Charles Sereff.

Some other grandmasters en pioneers who hold a high degree are: late Grandmaster Park Jung Tae (deceased in 2002, pioneer of ITF and founder of GTF), Jhoon Rhee and Hee Il Cho (founder AIMA).

The highest ranked Taekwon-do practicioners in the Netherlands are: Master Y.K.Kim (8th degree WTF / HTA), Jafar Zareei (8th degree WTF / TBN), Ben Oude Luttikhuis (7th degree WTF / TBN), Jimmy Rommy (7th degree NTA), Wijnand Tapilatu (7th degree ITF), James Tjin A Ton (8th degree ITF), Peter Sanders (7th degree ITF) and late Bart Stokhof (8th degree ITF)

SIGNIFICANCE BELT COLOURS
In Taekwon-Do, character development, fortitude, tenacity, and technique are graded as well as individual capacity. The promotional scale is divided into nineteen ranks - 10 grades (Gups) and nine degrees (Dans.) The former begins with 10th grade (Gup) the lowest and ends at first grade. Degrees begin with the first degree (Dan) and end with the ultimate, ninth degree.

There are six belts: white, yellow, green, blue, red and black. White is given to beginners and black is given to students who have progressed through the grades and have a solid foundation for learning the techniques of Taekwon-Do.

10th/9th kup:
Signifies innocence, as that of the beginning student who has no previous knowledge of Taekwon-Do.

8ste kup
8th/7th kup:
Signifies the earth from which a plant sprouts and takes root as the foundation of Taekwon-Do is being laid.

6th kup
6th/5th kup:
Signifies the plant's growth as Taekwon-Do skills begin to develop.

4th kup
4th/3rd kup:
Signifies the Heaven towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Taekwon-Do progresses.

2nd kup
2nd/1st kup:
Signifies Danger, cautioning the the student to exercise control and warning the opponent to stay away.

1st dan
1st-9th degree:
Opposite of white, therefore signifying the maturity and proficiency in Taekwon-Do, also indicates the wearer's imperviousness to darkness and fear.

Good achievment of the LEA cimeottme! It will be great to follow the happenings on LEA. I have just one suggestion: Let a pice of "land" and time stay open for afficionados for art that cannot present a heavy curriculum vitae from practicing or organizing art but has an exciting or in anyway interesting idea they want to do and exhibit. That is a way to nourish new talents, to give them oppportunity for trial and error and for getting advice from you who are experianced.Maybe you can even introduce a mentoring system for persons wanting to implement their ideas but has little or no earlier background in art.
